Reports suggest Babar Azam is likely to be reappointed as Pakistan’s Test captain, replacing Shan Masood. An official announcement is still awaited, but the buzz around this potential change is getting louder by the day.
Why This Is Happening
Shan Masood’s tenure as Test captain has been far from impressive. Under his leadership, Pakistan has lost 12 out of 16 Test matches. The team finished at the bottom of the World Test Championship standings and suffered humiliating defeats, including a whitewash against Bangladesh. With Pakistan still scheduled to play seven more Tests this year, the PCB is reportedly considering a change.
According to sources, influential figures within the PCB believe this is the right time to bring Babar back. The plan is to first reinstate him as Test captain and then prepare him for ODI captaincy ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
Babar’s Captaincy Record
Babar previously led Pakistan in 20 Tests, winning 10 and losing 6 with a win percentage of 50. Overall, he is Pakistan’s second-most successful captain with 84 international wins, behind only Imran Khan.
The Other Side
However, not everyone is convinced. Salman Ali Agha, Pakistan’s current white-ball captain, is also considered a strong contender for the Test captaincy. Some reports indicate Salman has the support of influential members within the selection committee. There is also debate about whether Shan Masood’s experience in English conditions might be valuable for the upcoming tours.
What Do You Think?
Babar has a proven record as captain, but he has already stepped down twice. Shan Masood has struggled with results. Salman Ali Agha is an emerging leader.
